PROTECTED CULTIVATION IN TURKEY

Author:   A. Sevgican
Abstract:
Protected cultivation began in the 1940's in Turkey in glasshouses built in Antalya. After plastics introduced to agriculture, protected cultivation area increased rapidly and now total area has reached to 33,834 ha. Area under low plastic tunnel is 58 % of the total, while the rest belongs to greenhouses. 77 and 23 % of the greenhouses are covered with plastic films and glass, respectively. Most of the greenhouses and tunnels are located on the Mediterranean coast with favorable climatic conditions. Crop production is realized mainly in unheated greenhouses by taking some precautions against frost. Vegetables, ornamental plants and fruits are grown in 95, 4 and 1 % of the total greenhouse area, respectively.

This paper is aimed to summarize the present growing conditions such as development of protected cultivation, construction and covering materials, size, cultivated crops and technology of crop production.
