ISHS Acta Horticulturae 491: International Symposium Greenhouse Management for Better Yield & Quality in Mild Winter Climates

FOREWORD

Author:   Y. TÜZEL
Abstract:
The ISHS Symposium on Greenhouse Management for Better Yield and Quality in Mild Winter Climates was held in Antalya between November 3–5, 1997. Eighty different papers consisting of 43 oral presentations and 37 posters on protected cultivation were presented. These studies covered a wide spectrum of problems faced in greenhouse management under mild winter climates. They highlighted the improvements that have been brought about as a result of these investigations, covering aspects as improvement of productivity and quality while reducing environmental degradation through the optimum and "wise" utilisation of water and purchased inputs including fertilisers and pesticides.

Plant Production and Protection Division of FAO took an important role in the organisation of the Symposium and preparation of the proceeding. Gathering of the FAO Regional Working Group on Greenhouse Crop Production in the Mediterranean Region added onto the success of the Symposium.

The International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) especially the Commission Protected Cultivation Working Group Protected Cultivation in Mild Winter Climates led the way to organise this International Symposium.

The Symposium and the final proceeding published as a special issue of Acta Horticulturae were realised as an output of an intense teamwork. I would like to express my cordial thanks to the Scientific and Organising Committee members and the editors Dr. Bernard Bailey, Dr. Aileen Smith, Dr. Stan Burrage, Assoc. Prof. Ayse Gül and Dr. Özlem Tuncay for their endless efforts. I would like to mention that Hakan Altunlu from Ege University did his best to compile all of the files and to put them in the final form requested by ISHS.

I wish to extend my full appreciation to the Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Council (TÜBITAK), The British Council and the Turkish Society for Horticultural Science for their financial support and Ege University Faculty of Agriculture and Citrus and Glasshouse Research Institute as the hosting institutions.

Having experienced an active and fruitful participation, we all believe that further activities of the group will receive much attention and produce invaluable data for the related sector.
