| Abstract:
Uneven degreening, a kind of ripening disorder in banana peels, occurs seasonally in Taiwan. The affected bananas are characterized by either partial or delayed yellowing of peels for the mild case, or remaining green for the severe one, after ethylene treatment. Uneven degreening is a serious problem affecting the quality of bananas produced in subtropical Taiwan. Some factors suspected for its occurrence, included chemical hazard, virus infection, overuse of nitrogen fertilizer, low temperature, and genetic factor etc. Temperature below 20°C prevailing in winter during bunch development and genetic have been so far considered as the major contributing factors. An integrated method was designed to reduce uneven degreening of bananas, including the use of cultivars of low susceptibility to uneven degreening, elimination of disordered plants in the stock nurseries which supply suckers for micropropagation program, and the use of brown paper cover instead of blue polyethylene cover for bunch protection. | |
