The development of a protoplast system permits plant regeneration from a single cell.
This technology may be then utilized to generate somatic hybrids through cell fusion and transgenic plants by the incorporation of foreign genes through electroporation.
However, banana protoplast cultures of only a few cultivars have been reported.
We carried out the plant regeneration from protoplasts of “maçã”, a Brazilian dessert banana (Musa spp., AAB group). Protoplasts were isolated from cultured embryogenic calli and suspension cells.
Successful cell divisions followed by somatic embryogenesis and plantlet differentiation were achieved by a nurse culture of highly dividing rice cells.
