Abstract:
Banana plants produced by in vitro multiplication often include morphologically variant plants. To evaluate the possible value of using electrophoretic analyses of protein to monitor the uniformity of the multiplied plants, the electrophoretic profiles of dissociated total protein and 11 enzymes of leaves and suckers of normal and variant plants of cvs. Grande Naine and Nanicão have been determined. The enzymes esterase, malic dehydrogenase, phosphoglicoisomerase and peroxidase were polymorphic in one or both cultivars. Variant plants provided profiles of dissociated protein, esterase, peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase not observed among the normal plants. The possible implications of the observations are discussed and it is concluded that the use of electrophoretic analyses probably would be justified only when the expected incidence of variation was high.
