Abstract:
Particle bombardment of embryogenic cell suspensions of the plantain cultivar ‘Three Hand Planty’ resulted in the recovery of a large number of putative transformants.
Molecular (PCR, Southern analysis) and biochemical (ELISA) analysis demonstrated the efficiency of the transformation procedure and showed that the plants obtained are transgenic and express the introduced antifungal gene.
Tolerance of those plants to Fusarium infections under field conditions will be investigated.
This banana transformation system can also be used to meet other challenges in banana breeding in the subtropics, such as salt stress and water deficiency.
