BANANA INSECT PESTS

Abstract:
There are many insect species that occur in banana crops, although only some of them can be considered economic pests. In this paper, banana pests are described, with special reference to the banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus, that is considered the most important pest in almost all banana-producing countries. Controlling alternatives (host plant resistance, cultural practices, biological control and trapping) have been developed, aiming to reduce the costs and risks of insecticides treatment. At EMBRAPA/CNPMF, we have been studying the effect of mulching on banana weevil and its natural enemies in Pioneira cultivar. The treatment CI. ensiformes and mulching of banana parts produced higher C. sordidus adults accounts in both conditions fertilized and non-fertilized areas. Some Omalodes foveola predators were found more frequently in mulching of banana parts treatment left at random in the soil, most of them in non-fertilized areas. A research is being developed at EMBRAPA-CNPMF in order to evaluate some genotypes of Musa spp. in laboratory conditions. So far, there have been results only about some triploid and tetraploid genotypes. It was observed that JV03-15 increased larval development period. In Prata Comum, the insects completed larval phase earlier. As for the pre-pupal phase, the highest value was registered in Pacovan, while in Pioneira, it was the smallest. No statistical difference was observed for the pupal weight. At EMBRAPA-CNPMF, a research on biological control of C. sordidus has just been started in order to determine the best temperature and humidity conditions for the development of Beauveria bassiana and to evaluate biological control of C. sordidus in Bahia state South and Recôncavo Region. We have also made forward observations in Azadirachta indica effect on C. sordidus, in laboratory conditions.
