Abstract:
The mango is a very popular crop in the tropics and is also becoming increasingly in demand in Europe and America.
It is now grown commercially in most of the tropical countries, India being one of the chief exporters.
It is said to have originated in the Indo-Burma Region (De Candolle, 1904; Mukherjee, 1951). In most of the West African countries where it is grown, very little research work has been done on crop improvement and, as a result, the cultivars with local names have not been identified.
Most of the named cultivars have been imported.
Almost all the indigenous cultivars in Ghana are very fibrous and exhibit polyembryony.
The endocarps of the seeds also vary in thickness and so prevent the seeds from germinating uniformly.
An attempt was made at Legon to test seeds from selected trees from different regions in Ghana for germination and polyembryonic characteristics.
