Abstract:
New shoot blight symptoms of fire blight were recorded for the first time during October on five apple cultivars in West Virginia.
The three-year-old trees were grown on a Y trellis and were exposed to a very wet growing season, with precipitation 70% above normal.
Succulent shoot growth continued throughout October and severe shoot blight was observed on all cultivars.
The term “autumnal shoot blight” is proposed for this late season occurrence of fire blight.
