Abstract:
The Geneva (NY) apple rootstock breeding program has developed a series of fire blight-resistant rootstocks that range in dwarfing character from producing very small trees (similar to M.27) to large seedling size trees.
All were selected for fire blight resistance by shoot tip inoculation of 10–30 cm plants, and subsequently retested several times.
As young seedlings, they survived flood inoculation with zoospores of several isolates of Phytophthora cactorum. They were also evaluated for resistance to woolly apple aphid (WAA), but this was not a determinant factor in selection.
Orchard characteristics of the four rootstocks so far released, Geneva (G.) 65, G.16, G.11, and G.30 are described, as well as notes about forthcoming releases.
