Abstract:
In 1989 new disease symptoms were recorded on quince in the region of Plovdiv.
The same symptoms were also found on pear, medlar and apple.
Using common bacteriological methods, some of the main morphological, cultural and physiological characteristics of the pathogenic isolates obtained from these four hosts were defined.
A lot of these isolates were also tested with molecular methods, as an E. amylovora-specific PCR and the AFLP genomic typing.
Results of all the tests showed unambiguously that the Bulgarian bacterial isolates possessed characteristics typical for the pathogenic group obtained from pome fruits, and that it concerned the fire blight pathogen E. amylovora.
