Abstract:
Fire blight spread through an area of the Po Valley, in the period 1995–1998. In Emilia Romagna the officially confirmed cases were 6 in 1995, 30 in 1996 and 721 in 1997. In the period June-July 1997, there was an epidemic of fire blight caused by favourable weather conditions.
The distribution of cases identified in 1997 was established using the UTM coordinates of each contaminated pear orchard (CO) and the software Arcview Spatial Analyst with Inverse Distance Weighted surface functions.
This revealed 3 high density (HD) zones (1.2 CO/km2) and 5 medium density (MD) zones (0.7 CO/km2). A comparison of the locations of the HD and MD zones with the 30 cases found the previous year suggested that an important focus was not reported in 1996 and that E. amylovora had also spread over long distances, around 14–17 km, as well as over short and medium distances.
