ISHS Acta Horticulturae 488: XI International Symposium on Apricot Culture

SELECTION OF SOME PROMISING APRICOT HYBRIDS RESISTANT TO SHARKA (PLUM POX VIRUS) DISEASE

Keywords:   Plum pox virus, apricot resistance, graft transmission
Abstract:
Plum pox virus disease (Sharka, PPV) has been a very severe problem for plum, apricot and peach culture in Greece. For the control of the disease on apricot, where damage is particularly important because the cultivated local varieties are proven to be very susceptible, a program for breeding resistant varieties was started in the year 1982. In this program the apricot cultivars Stark Early Orange and Stella, which from a previous research in the Pomology Institute of Naoussa had proven to be resistant to Sharka, were used for crossing. These two varieties were crossed with some varieties susceptible to the disease and till 1984 400 hybrids were obtained. From the study of the hybrids it is demonstrated that a percentage of them inherited the resistance to Sharka disease and 10 hybrids are considered promising, as far as the resistance to the virus and the quality of the produced fruits are concerned.
