APRICOT BREEDING PROGRAMME IN BULGARIA - NEW RESULTS

Author:   E. Tzoneva
Abstract:
The aim of the apricot breeding programme developed in Bulgaria since 1988 was to obtain new cultivars, which combine most of the valuable economic and biological characteristics.

Ten crossings were made among 14 cultivars in 1990. In 1993 the seedlings were planted in the selection plantation. The populations of ten open pollinated cultivars were also estimated. These seedlings were planted in the same plantation in 1992.

The biological and pomological data from the fruits of the above mentioned two groups of seedlings are given in this paper.

The first results are promising. We estimate 5 hybrids as very early ripening, 6 as early ripening, 18 as late ripening, and 2 as very late ripening. Seventeen seedlings have late term of blooming. We obtain 3 hybrids with absolutely glabrous fruit and 35 with glossy fruit.

All the five very early ripening hybrids, five early ripening and nine late ripening hybrids possess a high fruitfulness. Four hybrids combine the characteristics of a large, bicolour, attractive, tasty and glossy fruit. Two very late ripening hybrids have a large, attractive and tasty fruit. One of them is bicolour, and the other is glossy.
