ISHS Acta Horticulturae 488: XI International Symposium on Apricot Culture

PROMISING APRICOT SELECTIONS OBTAINED BY THE SECTION OF CASERTA OF THE ISTITUTO SPERIMENTALE PER LA FRUTTICOLTURA OF ROME

Author:   F. Pennone
Keywords:   early ripening, breeding, apricot
Abstract:
A program to obtain a genetic improvement of the apricot began in 1986 with the aim of reaching the following objectives: extension of the harvest season, high and regular productivity, high fruit quality (size, sugar content, aroma, flesh firmness, etc.), resistance to Monilinia laxa and Plum Pox virus and processing suitability.

Standard breeding techniques, i.e. self pollination, open pollination, crossing by emasculation and hand pollination have been employed.

120 combinations came out using 72 different parents chosen in such a way that it was possible to combine the useful characteristics of the different genotypes.

Since 1986, 6000 seedlings have been obtained, of which about 3000 have already been evaluated: the most interesting selections were grafted and planted in different areas so that it was possible to observe their behavior compared with the most widespread cultivars.

The traits of 4 promising early ripening selections are reported here.
