EPIPHYTOTIC PROBLEMS OF ALTERNARIA BLIGHT ON APRICOT

Author:   L. Ivanova
Keywords:   Alternaria, Bulgaria
Abstract:
The investigations were carried out at the Apricot Research Station, Silistra in 1995–1996. The pathogen agent was examined on apricot tree leaves which showed necrotic spots and which were isolated and purified on PDA.

The Alternaria blight was induced by the fungus called Alternaria tenuissima (Fries.) Wilthshire. It appears on leaves as irregular spots of grey-witish colour. It perforates the leaves and it causes an early leaf drop. This attack could be the result of the application of fungicides.

The behaviour of some apricot varieties to this disease was evaluated. The following cultivar proved to be moderately resistant: Czehia, Carola 1 A, Ranna Kishinevscka, Ranna Silistrenska, Early Orange, Hungarian Best, Jantarni.

To prevent and control the disease, several treatments with Captan 50 UP (0,25%) are recommended when the first disease spot occurs.
