ISHS Acta Horticulturae 488: XI International Symposium on Apricot Culture

APRICOT BREEDING FOR QUALITY AND SELF-COMPATIBILITY

Authors:   J. Egea, L. Burgos
Keywords:   Apricot, Breeding, Prunus armeniaca, Quality, Self-compatibility
Abstract:
Among the apricot population from Murcia there are several cultivars, that were selected from seeds by growers, with an exceptional organoleptic quality. The most widespread and known of these cultivars is ‘Moniquí’, although there are others with similar or even better quality, like ‘Velázquez Fino’ or ‘Gitano’.

Self-incompatibility is a characteristic in most of these high-quality cultivars, which is associated to low productivity in modern orchards. For this reason they are less cultivated than before and are being substituted by more productive cultivars.

Our breeding program has as one of its objectives the obtention of cultivars that maintain the exceptional organoleptic quality of those Murcian cultivars but that are self-compatible to ensure a good productivity in our culture conditions.
