Abstract:
A computer program, named Irrigere, is proposed to help to improve processing tomato quality through suitable management of water application to plants. This program estimates real evapotranspiration (Etc) from daily climatic data based on the estimate of Eto according to the Pennmann-Montheith equation modified by Allen et al. (1994 a, b) and from the new cultural coefficient proposed by Allen et al. (in press). The estimate of this cultural coefficient is based on the calculated water content in the soil surface layer which is able to contribute to soil evaporation and on plant transpiration. The soil water reserve within the root depth is calculated daily from soil characteristics. The root depth varies according to a linear model. In order to obtain a sufficiently high value of fruit dry matter content the program applies a water stress level which varies according to the crop phase and stops the water supply in order to exhaust the available water in the root zone at the harvest date. The program proposes the irrigation dose to be supplied on a daily basis.
