| Abstract:
Processing tomato growers in California are unable to maximize their potential profits due to a number of different reasons. One of the chief reasons is the lack of information concerning the characteristics contained within each variety. The paper examines some of the reasons why there is little correlation between the share of production and the potential profits of each variety. The study also examines the relationship between seed prices and the value of individual characteristics contained within each variety. The study found that characteristics that apparently are very important have little or no impact on the prices charged for each variety by seed dealers. The study suggests that if data collection and dissemination were improved, it would enhance the efficiency of the California processing tomato industry. | |
