Abstract:
In the end of 80th new powdery mildew, caused by Oidium licopersicum attacked the green-house tomatoes in the North-Western region of Russian Federation to result in hard damage.
Breeding for tomato resistance to new powdery mildew begun with utilization of sources of resistance: L. hirsutum PL 247087, F3 (L. esculentum x L. pimpinellifolium Red Current BP 10815), F3 (L. esculentum x L. Cheesmanii K3969), F3-F4 (L.Humboldii VIR 2884 x L. esculentum)x and F3 (L. esculentum x L. hirsutum glabratum VIR 4175) selected under natural inoculation condition Also 6 combination (tested material x methods of inoculation) were tested to obtain a system of complementary express resistance test-methods.
Seedling inoculation by spraying with spores suspension suggested by Lindhout (1994) is the most acceptable for primer tests of breeding material.
Two methods included using of detached plant parts - lateral shoots with suspension spraying and leaves in Petry dish with inoculation by surface contact - are convenient for resistance test of growing plant during vegetation period without inoculation of whole tested plant.
Combining of these 3 test-methods we've studied from 1994 resistance of more than 3000 patterns of 40 different genotypes and obtained number of lines with resistance level 0–1(scale from 0 to 4) which characterized by fruit 55–75 mm in diameter. and another with cherry-type fruit.
