ISHS Acta Horticulturae 487: VI International Symposium on Processing Tomato & Workshop on Irrigation & Fertigation of Processing Tomato

TETRANYCHUS URTICAE ON PROCESSING TOMATOES HOW TO REASON CULTURAL PRACTICES?

Author:   J. Bezert
Keywords:   damages, harmfulness point, population, settled leaflets, yield
Abstract:
Tetranychus urticae is more and more present inside the French processing tomato fields. The damages caused by mites can lead to a serious decrease of the yield if there are not a treatment at the beginning of the infestation. In a trial in 1997, we have lost 30% of the yield between a early treatment and the control. With this results, we propose some values for a harmfulness point, but it's necessary to confirm this values with another trials.

To count mites is a very long and hard work. We are looking to find some correlation between the population and easier measured data. The correlation between the number of female by leaflets and the percentage of leaflets settled by more than one female is good (R=0,96). With confirmation in 1998, it will be a easy method for determinate the evolution of the infestation in the fields. This method can be use by growers and agronomic adviser without any optical instrument.
