Abstract:
Results are presented of two-year field trials on the tomato San Marzano variety.
This variety used to represent a major part of the canned peeled tomato production in the Campania region but is presently little cultivated due to both phytopatogenic and structural problems.
Recently the UE Regulation nr. 1263/96 has given the "DOP" to San Marzano as typical regional product, thus renewing the interest in this ecotype.
The research was aimed both at characterizing the available San Marzano genotypes in reference to the agronomic, productive, qualitative and technological standards reported in the above cited UE regulation and also at evaluating the profitability of the culture.
Trials were carried out during 1996 at the Cirio Ricerche Experimental Station "Fabrizio Marsocci" in Acerra (NA) and during 1997 in two commercial farms located in San Marzano sul Sarno (SA) and Poggiomarino (NA), in areas included in the UE regulation.
Given the major phytopatogenic problems caused by virus-carrying insects (e.g.
CMV) results were compared of trials under open field and aphid-proof nethouse conditions.
Yield levels obtained in the open field were always not sufficient for the remuneration of all production factors, even for the best genetic constitutions.
The aphid-proof nethouse improved the vegetative growth of almost all genotypes under trial and hence their yield; the best results were given by Cirio Selections 1 and 3 and among traditional ecotypes by the 20 SMEC 3.
Cultivation under aphid-proof nethouse also improved the quality characteristics of the berries, except for firmness which is in most cases reduced.
