ISHS Acta Horticulturae 487: VI International Symposium on Processing Tomato & Workshop on Irrigation & Fertigation of Processing Tomato

THE EFFECT OF THE PLANTING DATE ON THE PROGRAMMATION YIELD AND QUALITY OF PROCESSING TOMATO IN NAVARRE (SPAIN)

Authors:   J.I. Macua, A. Santos, J. Zúñiga
Abstract:
In this study we intend to describe the experiments performed on planting dates with plastic cover, with a view to a yield programmation for processing tomato with a time-scaled ripening schedule, in order to maximize the harvesting period. The reason behind this is that, due to its climatology and traditional growing methods, the harvesting period in Navarre is very short and the local processing plants are unable to absorb the entire yield in such a short period of time. By using plastic mulch it has been observed that planting dates can be changed, from April through to June, and the first fruit can thereby be harvested at the beginning of August and the last at the end of September or beginning of October. The yield differences between these dates are of little significance. In terms of quality it has been observed that the fruit harvested in August is healthier, its having more °Brix and colour.
