Author:   S. Fonseca
Keywords:   Arecaceae, habitats, growth habits, uses
Abstract:
Mexico's peculiar geography allows for a great diversity of habitats where palms can grow, sometimes constituing a type of vegetation called "Palmar", or as important elements of other types of vegetation. Ecological conditions such as climate, soil, elevation, temperature, are discussed. Various habits of palms are mentioned. The uses of palms are reviewed giving examples of their local, industrial and ornamental utilization. The problem of overexploitation is also considered and emphasized.
