Abstract:
The Botanical Garden of the University of Valencia (Spain) was created in 1802. Since the beginning, and especially from the middle of the 19th century, several palm species have been grown.
Nowadays they constitute an interesting collection. Phoenix, Sabal, Livistona and Washingtonia are the most represented genera, and some of these palms are more than 150 years old.
Other genera and about one hundred species are grown in our garden at the present time.
Most of these palms are grown outdoors, but a greenhouse built at the end of the 19th century, recently restored, shelters cold sensitive palms.
In this report we present the collection and a study on their environmental conditions in Valencia, in order to discuss the resistance of each species and their possible use in gardening.
