Abstract:
Many of the container-grown palms in the Glasshouse garden at Madrid's Atocha Train Station appeared to be diseased.
Subsequent laboratory study confirmed the fungi Gliocladium vermoesenii and Diplodia theobromae for Washingtonia sp. and Phytophthora spp. and Ceratocystis paradoxa (anamorph Thielaviopsis paradoxa) for Roystonea sp., as well as several opportunistic, stress-related pathogens.
It was concluded that the underlying cause was a series of agronomic errors, chiefly soil-water-plant imbalances, severe soil compactation, and incorrect RH, light and temperature for the types of palms growing in the Glasshouse.
