THE DATE PALM POPULATION (PHOENIX DACTYLIFERA) OF ABANILLA

Abstract:
In warmer areas of Murcia region in Spain, the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) trees are being cultivated since Middle Age or before mainly for landscaping. The fruit has local economic importance. One the areas of the region, Abanilla, has more population of female date palm trees than male ones, probably caused by selection action and cultural practices of growers. Local names for fruits given according to the uses are Candíos, De Sol, De Adobo and Tiernos. They are also classified according tho fruit shape and colour. The unripe dates of some selections are dipped in wine vinegar for 48 ours before eating them.
