Abstract:
The spiralling whitefly Aleurodicus dispersus Russell (1965) was recorded for the first time in the Canary Islands in 1965 (Russell, 1965). Nowadays, a new species which belongs to the same subfamily (Aleurodicinae), Lecanoideus floccissimus Martin, Hernández-Suárez and Carnero (1997), has been observed.
In recent years, they have become a serious problem specially in gardens of the coastal areas, infesting a wide variety of ornamental plants of the families Arecaceae and Musaceae. These pests pose a serious threat to banana and mango crops and many endemic plants in the Canary Islands.
The purpose of this comunication is to facilitate the recognition of Aleurodicus dispersus and Lecanoideus floccissimus, which are now well established in the Canary Islands.
A review of the economic impact of both species and new host plants in the Canary Islands is also presented.
