Abstract:
As a preliminary part of a study of most Cuban palms, a bibliographic review of the genus Copernicia is being made.
This genus has been monitored in some provinces and the collections of the Jardín Botánico Nacional and the Jardín Botánico de Cienfuegos have been evaluated.
The taxonomic review of the genus has not been done, so that 17 species, 6 natural hybrids and 2 varieties have been considered, according to Dahlgren and Glassman's (1963) criteria and updated by Muñiz and Borhidi (1982). Besides that, the distributions of some taxa of Copernicia in Cuba are shown as well as ecological aspects which may determine it.
The distributional patterns of Copernicia appear opposed to the rest of the Cuban plants genera, just for the mere fact of being mostly concentrated in Central Cuba.
