Abstract:
Dependence between the mineral composition of ‘Gloster’ apples harvested in 11 commercial plantations and their susceptibility to bitter pit (BP) and internal breakdown (IB) was investigated in a 3-year trial.
Concentration of mineral constituents was determined in apples 2–3 weeks before harvest.
Fruit were harvested at full harvest maturity and stored in a cold store for 150–165 days.
After the storage the incidence of BP and IB was assessed.
Apples containing 5.2 mg Ca/100 g f.w and 136 mg K/100 g f.w. (K/Ca ratio 26.1) were affected by BP in 2.4%. Incidence of BP on fruit with K/Ca ratio 47.3 and 38.0 was respectively 13.8% and 7.3%. The content of Ca in apples was a more reliable determinant of their susceptibility to IB than the K/Ca ratio.
