Abstract:
At the Fruit and Grape Research Centre, Cacak, over the period 1979–1996, work was conducted on breeding winter apple cultivars resistant to scab, Venturia inaequalis, with fruit of good quality, and tree habit of suitable for modern growing systems of apple.
From 3,975 seedlings developed by hybridization and open pollination of selected apple genotypes, 60 promising hybrids were selected.
They proved to be resistant or slightly susceptible to V. inaequalis in the field.
All the selected hybrids were grafted on M9 rootstock and planted in trial orchards in 1990–93 to monitor their resistance and to study their phenological and pomological properties.
Some of the selections started bearing fruits in 1994 and 1995.
