Abstract:
Previous work has identified resistance genes for three economically important aphid pests of apple.
Three different mapping strategies have been used to identify linkages to resistance genes.
Recent work has identified molecular markers that are linked tightly to the gene Sd1 for resistance to the rosy leaf curling aphid (Dysaphis devecta). In addition, the prospects for identifying markers linked to the genes for resistance to the woolly apple aphid (Eriosoma lanigerum) and the rosy apple aphid (D. plantaginea) are being investigated and preliminary data are presented.
Marker-assisted selection techniques have the potential to increase the efficiency of apple breeding programmes in the future.
