SELECTION FOR RESISTANCE TO FUNGAL DISEASES IN APPLE

Authors:   Z.A. Kozlovskaya, T.P. Kurdyuk, G.M. Marudo
Keywords:   frost damage
Abstract:
Canker damage of apple trees has recently become a serious problem in Belarus. Severe fungal disease development occurs almost every year. At present, the main aim of apple breeding is the creation of genotypes with several resistances and the first step is the selection of major sources of resistance to different fungal pathogens in our genebank. As result of the investigation cultivars ‘Jonafree’ and ‘Redcroft’ and selections 84-47/50, 38/58, 25/184, 36/I-III and 31/I-III were found to have combined resistance to frost, scab and canker damage. Such local cultivars as ‘Chulanovka’, ‘Grushovka Revelskaya’ and ‘Titovka’ have high resistance to frost and canker disease and they are tolerant to scab.
