Abstract:
Every year, 40 to 80 new apple cultivars or selections, of which approximately half are claimed to have scab resistance or tolerance, are planted in the cultivar trials at Wilhelminadorp and cultivated without any fungicide application.
The amount and level of infection by scab, powdery mildew and fruit tree canker on leaves, fruits or wood are recorded annually.
Data from more than 300 accessions are available, but only about 90 are given here.
Almost every year, some scab was found on material with Vƒ resistance.
A few cultivars without Vƒ showed high tolerance to scab.
For future (integrated) fruit production, cultivars that combine resistance or tolerance to fungal diseases and fruit quality are essential.
Common cultivars, like ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Jonagold’, ‘Gala’, ‘Braeburn’ and ‘Elstar’ are highly susceptible.
For the near future, new scab-resistant cultivars or selections such as CPRO 78038-9 (‘Elstar’ x ‘Priscilla’), CPRO 84015-17 (‘Elstar’ x ‘Prima’), ‘Ecolette’, ‘Topaz’, ‘Ahrista’, ‘Gerlinde’, ‘Pristine’ and ‘GoldRush’, may offer good opportunities for sustainable apple culture, because of their disease resistance and fair to high fruit quality.
