Abstract:
Sixteen apple varieties and advanced selections with varying degrees of resistance to powdery mildew were tested in the greenhouse.
Shoots of budded plants in narrow pots were inoculated using an inoculation tower.
The number of diseased leaves (upper and lower surface), mean attack of leaves, and mean attack of the shoot were recorded.
The results were compared with disease observations made in an unsprayed orchard during several years.
A good correlation with level of resistance in the orchard was found.
Estimating the visual attack of the whole shoot would suffice.
This method is very useful to test quickly the level of resistance of potential parents in a breeding programme.
