Abstract:
Peach tree decline in Romania is caused by infestation with a mycoplasma agent.
Sixty peach and nectarine cultivars and hybrids were tested during 1990–1995, using the Dienes technique.
Precise identification of the mycoplasma agent in the phloem vessels of the plant is achieved by electron microscopy.
In a survey of the cultivar collection average infestation over the 5 years was 42%. Some peach and nectarine hybrids and cultivars were found without mycoplasma symptoms (‘Romamer II’, ‘Flavortop’, ARK 134, ‘Flacara’, ‘Superba de Toamna’) and can be used as mycoplasma free parents in the peach breeding programme.
