Abstract:
A detailed linkage map has been constructed in the region of the Vƒ resistance gene from Malus floribunda which confers resistance to apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) and which has been introgressed into apple, M. pumila. A segregating population of ‘Royal Gala’ x A172–2) was used to locate 12 markers (11 RAPD and one SCAR) around the Vƒ gene, including two new markers which were identified by bulked segregant analysis using 200 paired RAPD primers.
The genetic map extends over 37 cM and has markers on both sides of the Vƒ gene.
A predictive screen of a population of 130 seedlings from a repetition of the same cross-illustrated the utility of marker-assisted selection for Vƒ resistance in breeding lines.
