KARYOTYPE ANALYSIS OF PRUNUS AVIUM L.

Authors:   M. Schuster, R. Ahne
Keywords:   cherry, karyotype, C-banding
Abstract:
In the past, cytogenetic studies have been performed in Prunus avium L. (sweet cherry 2n = 2x = 16), but until now there has been no karyotype analysis. Detailed karyological investigations can help to describe phylogenetic relationships among taxa. The karyotype analysis of Prunus avium L. was carried out on air-dried squash preparations of metaphase chromosomes using a computerized image analysis system. After C-banding, all metaphase chromosomes can be identified. All the chromosomes have C-bands and are morphologically distinguishable. The chromosome complement consisted of four metacentric and four submetacentric pairs. Three nucleolar chromosome pairs were observed.
