Abstract:
Self-fertility in sweet cherries is derived from the John Innes selection 2420; the origin of self-fertility in sour cherries, which are allotetraploid, is unknown.
Seedlings from two sweet cherry progenies and from six sour cherry progenies were scored for degree of self-fertility in the field by bagging branches and selfing the flowers.
The proportion of self-fertility in sweet cherry progenies was generally higher than in sour cherry progenies.
The proportion of self-fertility in sour cherry progenies was generally low, except in some progenies of crosses between fully self-fertile parents such as ‘Schattenmorelle’ x ‘Fanal’ and ‘Schattenmorelle’ x ‘Röhrigs Weichsel’.
