Abstract:
The morphological characteristics of 3,000 individuals of more than 30 apple progenies derived from the crosses made in 1992 and 1993 were observed on grafted trees. Apple cultivars used as parents included: cultivars with standard growth habit and tip bearing type i.e. ‘Granny Smith’ and ‘Priam’; cultivars with standard growth habit and standard ‘Golden Delicious’ bearing type i.e. ‘All Red Jonathan’, ‘Florina’ ‘Gloster’, ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Idared’, ‘Jonathan M41’, ‘Liberty’, ‘Prima’, ‘Priscilla’, ‘Richelieu’ and ‘Rouville’; and the Malus spp.M. floribunda Typ. Arb., M. x purpurea and M. baccata var. mandshurica. Shoot-growth, tendency to develop secondary shoots, leaf size, leaf shape and early formation of fruiting wood were evaluated. Most seedlings have oval leaf shape. A preponderance of medium leaf size or of medium and large leaves could be observed in most progenies. There were great differences in shoot growth among the progenies, and within progenies. The highest frequency of flowering plants was observed in progenies of Malus species.
