Abstract:
Parthenocarpy is an interesting property in apple cultivation as it may allow problems with cross pollination and biennial bearing to be avoided.
Several apple cultivars such as ‘Summerred’, ‘Liberty’, ‘Elstar’ and ‘Fiesta’ showed parthenocarpic tendencies; seeded and non-seeded fruits were observed on the same trees.
Pollination is not required to induce parthenocarpic fruit set in ‘Summerred’. A detailed study indicated that in this cultivar non-pollination, free self-pollination and artificial self-pollination gave a comparably low parthenocarpy after emasculation.
