Abstract:
Replicated trials of trees comprising segregating populations were established at different sites in Europe as part of the European Apple Genome Mapping Project.
Data have been collected relating to a wide range of traits over a period of years.
Aspects of the variability of data gathered in such a multi-site perennial fruit tree experiment are presented, together with a consideration of the effects that this variability could have on genetic analysis.
The properties of the experimental design employed are described, and compared to those that would have been desirable.
A different experimental design is suggested that might be more suitable for future trials concentrating on the analysis of quantitative traits.
