Abstract:
In the Hungarian breeding programme to obtain self-fertile sweet cherry varieties we have more than 400 hybrids with different levels of self-fertility.
An important aim of this programme is to combine early maturity with self-fertility.
Therefore, crosses were made between ‘Bigarreau Burlat’ and ‘Stella’. The 154 seedlings of the F1 progeny that reached cropping age were evaluated for flowering time, maturity time, level of self-fertility, skin colour, etc.
The flowering period of more than 25% of the hybrids was later than that of ‘Stella’, the later flowering of the parents.
One third had earlier maturity than ‘Bigarreau Burlat’, the earlier parent.
More than 50% of seedlings were self-fertile.
The levels of self-fertility were different, but more than 30% were good enough for commercial production.
No yellow-fruited seedlings were found; 25% had blushed coloured fruits.
