ISHS Acta Horticulturae 484: Eucarpia Symposium on Fruit Breeding and Genetics

ON THE GENETICS OF INCOMPATIBILITY IN SWEET CHERRIES

Author:   H. Schmidt
Abstract:
For most German cultivars only incompatibility groups, but no S allele constitutions, are known. Data on fruit set and pollen tube growth in numerous combinations gathered from our breeding programmes have been analysed. Four of the cultivars recently released from Jork Station proved incompatible with ‘Van’ and ‘Venus’; thus they are S1S3. ‘Oktavia’ and ‘Regina’ originated from a fully compatible cross of ‘Schneiders Späte Knorpel’ x ‘Rube’, a local cultivar, and are compatible with their sister cultivars ‘Johanna’, ‘Karina’ and ‘Viola’. ‘Erika’ and ‘Valeska’ are sister cultivars from the semi-compatible combination ‘Rube’ x ‘Stechmanns Bunte’. Three cultivars from a ‘Rube’ x ‘Allers Späte’ cross, ‘Alma’, ‘Annabella’ and ‘Bianca’ proved to be S1S5. ‘Merton Bigarreau’ and ‘Mermat’ are not S1S3. ‘Hedelfinger’ is neither S4S5 nor a ‘universal donor’. From our results so far from pollen tube growth of in vitro combinations of cultivars and selfs of seedlings, we conclude that ‘Stella’ and ‘Sunburst’ are S3S4' and Lapins S1S4'.
