Abstract:
Apple rootstocks Morioka No. 1 (ARM 1), No. 7 (ARM 7) and No. 8 (ARM 8) are dwarfing apple rootstocks soon to be released for commercial use in Japan.
These clones originated from a cross, made in 1972, between M. prunifolia and M9. The new rootstocks were initially selected in 1984 for high bark/wood ratio and propagation ability.
ARM 1, ARM 7 and ARM 8 are easily propagated vegetatively by hardwood cuttings.
The trunk girth of ‘Fuji’ trees on these rootstocks is similar to that on M9 EMLA, and yield efficiencies per unit trunk sectional area were shown after 13 years field evaluation to be higher than those of M9 EMLA and M26 EMLA. In indoor inoculation studies, ARM 1, ARM 7 and ARM 8 were resistant to woolly apple aphid and Phytophthora root rot.
