Abstract:
In the Faculty of Agriculture, Novi Sad, a project to breed columnar apple varieties started in 1987. The aim is the development of cultivars with different ripening seasons, and different colours.
In the last 10 years, 14,200 hybrid seedlings were produced from 47 crosses.
The number of seedlings with columnar tree habit as a result of hybridization between conventional apple cultivars and ‘McIntosh Wijcik’ ranged from 30% to 41%. In the second stage of selection 17 genotypes have been tested.
