Abstract:
Spain is one of the five top producers of apricot, with an annual average production of 200,000 tonnes; Murcia and Valencia, on the south east cost of Spain, account for 80% of the total production.
Apricot breeding in Murcia started in 1985 with the gathering of 140 local and foreign cultivars into a collection.
Currently 35 families from controlled crosses with a total number of more than 2500 seedlings are planted in the orchard for evaluation.
Objectives of the breeding programme include, fruit quality, self-compatibility and resistance to Sharka (plum pox). Classic and new breeding techniques are being used or developed to select high quality and productive seedlings which are resistant to Sharka.
