Abstract:
The results of the sweet cherry breeding programme conducted in Hungary since 1966 are described.
The breeding work falls into two categories, selection from the native sweet cherry seedling population in traditional cherry growing areas and a crossing programme involving both commercial varieties and traditional varieties.
In addition a clonal selection programme covered the improvement of traditional varieties.
In total 4583 seedlings have been evaluated and more than 300 self-fertile hybrids identified.
