Abstract:
Commercial apple production in Norway averages 10,000 tons per year, and is located in areas with a mean temperature of 12.5–14.0°C in the period May-September.
The present Norwegian apple breeding programme was initiated in 1981 at the Agricultural University of Norway.
In 1993, the programme was transferred to Ullensvang Research Centre, Division Njøs.
Major breeding aims are high fruit quality combined with adaptation to low summer temperatures and resistance to scab and powdery mildew.
Emphasis is put on cultivars for the first part of the season and cultivars that store well.
The first selections from the programme are now in the first stage of testing.
