Abstract:
A plant breeding programme was recently initiated to provide commercial rosehip growers with well adapted and high quality dogrose varieties. Genetic analyses are now being carried out to obtain background information for this programme. The dogroses are characterised by a unique meiosis that results in different chromosome numbers in the pollen cells and the egg cells. Morphometric diversity, analysed on seedlings obtained from field collections in the Nordic countries, showed that the amount and distribution of genetic variation varies considerably between species. Plants derived through experimental selfings and cross-pollinations have also been analysed in order to investigate the effects of the Canina meiosis on genetic recombination. Recently, we have introduced molecular markers (RAPDs) as a complement to the morphological characters in our studies of genetic variation.
